Casa Ora

Williamsburg

This mother-son Venezualan restaurant in East Williamsburg serves refined farm to table fare and modern cocktails. The dishes are upscale interpretations of traditional dishes from their home of Caracas and a portion of profits are donated to families seeking asylum.

Pierre Loti – Chelsea

Chelsea

Pierre Loti's Chelsea location is outfitted much like its Irving Place sister spot, with a vaguely Turkish vibe and quaint outdoor seating in front. The long space has minimal decoration, with the exception of two star-shaped mirrors adorning the walls, and one long cushion with tables lined in front. The menu is studded with wine-friendly bites and cheeses, but there are also eclectic options like stuffed sardines and bulgur patties . There's a servicable entrée list which includes a tasty pan-seared jumbo sea scallops with sauteed asparagus. The winelist offers about 70 bottles, 20 of which are also available by the glass.

Bubby's

Tribeca

This TriBeCa hangout is popular among neighborhood residents who like its casual indoor/outdoor atmosphere, and it is also a favorite for the New York film scene, given its close proximity to Miramax and Tribeca Film Festival offices. Originally started as a pie company, Bubby's menu has expanded to include classic American fare such as dense buttermilk biscuits, hearty soups, and barbecue and fried chicken dishes that will meet the standards of the most health-conscious of diners. John F. Kennedy, Jr. used to like to dine here, nowadays you're more likely to spot actors Harvey Keitel, Mira Sorvino, John Turturro, or any number of fashion models, directors, or television personalities. Despite the regular presence of celebrity clientele, Bubby's is a surprisingly low-key place to get a good meal. People bring their kids here, and even if there are a few notable people around, you don't need to be one to get seated or served. Now featuring brunch from midnight to 7am daily (except Mondays)!

Slate

Flatiron District

An upscale man cave, with plenty of billiards, ping-pong and other games available. Multiple screens to watch your sporting events, while sipping fancy cocktails at sumptuous curved bar. Decent restaurant serving serving typical contemporary American fare. Great place for after work or group meet ups.

Buddakan New York

Chelsea

Asian fusion hits Chelsea Market right where fabled Buddha Bar made only a transitory appearance. Here on the Ninth Avenue side, previously home to a lumber business and with an eye-popping 17,000 square feet on two floors, Buddakan provides some additional west side balance to the many new restaurants on the east side of Ninth Ave stretching from the Maritime Hotel down to the Gansevoort Hotel. The Starr organization added additional Feng Shui harmonious balance by depositing Iron Chef Morimoto at the other end of the Chelsea Market while executive chef Lon Symensma reigns here. Can lower Ninth and Tenth Avenues get any hotter? Our verdict: a Chinatown banquet hall morphed into a supper club, plus steroids, sleek interior and pretty-colored cocktails. Could you do better? We might opt instead for different transmigratory experience by dining at a hot Asian spot in Flushing and then cab back to a Lower East Side nightclub.

Edward's

Tribeca

Edwards is a small neighborhood American Bistro, which serves as a good fall back when the Odeon has a wait. Warm and friendly with a small outdoor seating area.

Angelo of Mulberry St.

Little Italy

Perfectly prepared pasta and Italian far in Little Italy.

Il Bastardo

Chelsea

Like its older relative next door, Sette VII, Il Bastardo specializes in Italian cuisine in a space that includes a large bar along the length of the dining room as well as a private rear space. Despite the shared kitchen facilities with Sette VII, Il Bastardo is indeed the bastard offspring that feeds off its relative next door. Service can be quite spotty. On one particular evening, our own editors waited 25 minutes for a bottle of wine that seemed impossible to locate. (We offered to assist in the search or to choose a different wine.) After our 45 minute wait for entrees, the oblivious waiter returned to the table and asked, "Would you like to see the dessert list?" We replied we would prefer our entrees first. While the seafood dishes can be quite good, Il Bastardo is all about Tuscan meat dishes. Lamb chops are particularly good. The desserts are especially bad. Perhaps recalling its previously life as Viscaya, the former nightclub in this space, seeing and being seen takes primary focus here over service and being served. The space is charming and ambient lighting creates an interesting atmosphere.

Hearth

East Village

Hearth is everything the word implies—a warm, comfortable restaurant with hospitality as its goal. Chef Marco Canora's cuisine employs seasonal, locally-sourced ingredients prepared with an Italian influence.

Puglia

Little Italy

Puglia has been offering cuisine from the Southern regions of Italy since 1919, but what has made them stand out in the saturated Italian market of Little Italy is the unbridled energy of the place—an energy wholly familiar to those of us who come from large Italian families. Every night is a festino, every meal is a banchetto, and every outburst of song is gratis.

House of Small Wonder

Williamsburg

Another Brooklyn cafe from the proprietors of the Anytime Cafe.

The Douglass

Park Slope

Pub with simple food - burgers, salad and the like. Ideal for casual night out with friends, brunch with friends, and watching sports with enemies.

Milk Bar - Upper West Side

Upper West Side

Caviar Russe

Midtown

Enjoy the finest products of our oceans and seas while they last at Caviar Russe, a splendid venue on Madison Avenue.

Palma

West Village

Everyday the ingredients on Palma D'Orazio's restaurant, Palma, arrive fresh from her organic garden and local markets. Palma's menu highlights fresh seafood, salads, vegetables and herbs of the season. Palma is nested on quaint Cornelia Street in the heart of Greenwich Village. The garden is a "hidden gem" that feels as if dining in a secret Italian garden. The Carriage House provides the feeling that one has arrived at an elegant yet welcoming Mediterranean home.

The Astor Room

Astoria

The Astor Room, brought to you by Chris Vlacich of the renowned Piccola Venezia, is located at the corner of the Kaufman Astoria Movie Studio. Descend the marble staircase to the mahogany bar in the original Paramount Studio dinner club where Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, and Rudolph Valentino once dined. Enjoy Chef Richard Pims' contemporary interpretation of American classics and Jerry Madden's handcrafted artisanal cocktails.

Saxon + Parole

NoHo

Executive Chef Brad Farmerie brings global approach to traditional grill fare in this warm inviting place on the Bowery. Focus on grilled meat and seafood, acompanied by seasonal and sustainable produce.

Chickpea

Flatiron District

This little storefront-cum-restaurant dishes out the best hummus, falafel and schwarma in the FInancial District, and judging by the constant line seen snaking around outside its humble doors is certainly beloved.
