Mimi's Hummus

Flatbush

A tiny little place that serves, among other things, the best hummus in Brooklyn, as well as other Middle Eastern cuisine like an Iraqi beet soup and ground-lamb pie.

Black Iron Burger

East Village

The grill may not be the black iron behemoth the owners originally invented--having been forsaken in favor of a energy-efficient stainless steel monstrosity--but the burgers don't suffer from a lack of flavor because of it!

Stone Street Tavern

Financial District

Stone Street Tavern deftly balances the usually cross-purposes of pleasing the local constituents and the Wall Streeters with a come-on, come-all atmosphere.

Five Leaves

Greenpoint

A restaurant-shaped part of Heath Ledger's legacy, Five Leaves offers a American nouveau cuisine in a maritime setting, with a great selection of soups and sandwiches.

Butter Lane

East Village

A delicious cupcakery in the East Village, serving buttery cupcakes made from pure ingredients like real vanilla beans, pure cocoa and dark chocolate, along with both both French and American buttercream icing.

Quality Meats

Midtown

Conceived of by the man behind Smith & Wollensky and designed by the intimidating AvroKO, Quality Meats takes the steakhouse to the next level with a contemporary take on the American carnivore's deepest fantasies, complete with an industrial restaurant meets Rocky practice room vibe. Might as well start from the top: there's a double rib steak on offer at Quality Meats to the tune of 64oz. per person, and a variety of prime cuts of meat you'd expect out of a steakhouse, like filet mignon, hanger steak, an aged bone-in sirloin, and veal chops. But besides that, there's a sensation tuna au poivre on offer, a tremendous roasted chicken, and a whole spate of appetizers that are as attractive as any of the mains. Roasted bone marrow, for instance, or the seared diver scallops with brown butter aioli, crabcakes, and even Hamachi sashimi.

Hill Country

Flatiron District

Yet more Texas influence in the Flatiron district, where you can expect southern comfort in this large space that capitalizes on both the supersize and barbecue trends so popular at present. While Hill Country offers two levels of seating for more than 250, every diner is directed to a line to queue for the 'cue. Similar yet more refined than the punchcard systen at Katz's on Houston Street, you have your card marked at each station, which you must retain or else face a $50 penalty when leaving. Tip: arrive early for lunch, or else face Shake Shack length lines with infernal wait times. Do try the ribs, brisket and prime rib, all priced by the pound, for the chicken does not measure up to the pork or beef offerings. You'll note that brisket can be had lean or slightly more fatty, and recall that fat means additional flavor. Your meat comes with crackers or white bread, both nice mopping-up options, especially if you go heavy on the sauces. Side dishes are fairly standard, ranging from black-eyed peas to macaroni (with or without chili) and sweet potatoes. Desserts are predictable, whether banana pudding or the familiar take on the pecan pie. The beer selection is below average for Manhattan, and you can order cocktails, wine and all other drinks at your table. Calculating the gratuity can be a challenge here, in particular if you procured your own beverages from the bar; we'll leave the bloggers to sort out this issue. While we find the barbecue here to be one of NYC's top contenders, despite the ever-increasing popularity of BBQ in the flatlands of NYC, Hill Country lacks the quirky authenticity you would find in Kansas City, Oakland or Austin. On the other hand, since faux authenticity and sparklin'-clean floors delight New Yorkers of all stripes, Hill Country certainly succeeds in recreating this Austin legend, with its Texas-focused specialty cocktail list, all-Texas wine list (!) and near-daily live music on the lower level.

Financier Patisserie – World Financial Center

Battery Park City

While the sandwiches are delectable, it's the excellent range of patisserie that makes Financier worth a special visit. Now with the re-opening of Harry's Café and Steak next door, the Financier empire—mirroring Wall Street, perhaps—has expanded, leveraging a relationship with the restaurant and opening new locations. Hot tip: the mini gâteau Saint-Honoré is exquisite, even moreso when consumed outside at one of the tables on this charming cobblestone street.

Financier Patisserie – Cedar Street
